There are some very special things that have contributed to my work as a folk artist. One of them is Lynne Kelly‘s book, The Memory Code. She has gone on to write a book called The Memory Craft, that I’m looking forward to reading.
What I discovered in myself was a desire to deepen my system of understanding plants as medicine using a memory tool. First, I created a string of beads to represent tree families. The amount of information in this string of beads was a bit overwhelming at first, 70+ tree families. Yet this tool I created barely touches the capacity of the memory tools that Lynne Kelly observed in peoples that continue to live indigenously – in the land they have lived in for centuries and in the ways they live on the land.
This was a reminder that we all descend from indigenous peoples, but very few of us in the U.S. live in the lands of our ancient ancestors and even fewer of us follow their ways. Many of us have little to go on when hoping to understand the old ways.
My work reflects my search for an authentic way to connect with my ancestry, heal, and create. I’m searching for authentic ways to give ease in a dangerous wondrous world.
My creative process involves numbers, colors, and shapes. It is a process of weaving plants and their stories into symbols. It evokes history and the symbols of my ancestors. It reveals the methods of herbalism and the foundations for my process of learning to live well.
The deeper I go, the more wondrous it gets.
